Industrial Engineering

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted the Industrial Engineering industry events in early 2020. Many events were postponed or cancelled due to the global health crisis, leading to disruptions in the industry’s ability to network, exchange ideas, and learn about the latest advancements. Despite these challenges, the industry quickly adapted to the changing circumstances by shifting towards virtual events.

The use of virtual platforms allowed event organizers to continue offering educational and networking opportunities to attendees, ensuring that engagement and interaction within the industry continued. In 2022, the industry events saw a mix of virtual, in-person, and hybrid events take centre stage. The combination of these different formats allowed for greater accessibility and collaboration among experts in the industry.

The period between early 2020 and the end of 2021 can be considered the “Covid period” for this report. The comparison of pre-2020 (before the pandemic) and post 2021 (after the pandemic) provides a glimpse into the current state of the industry and the road ahead.

INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING EVENTS OVERVIEW

The growth of the Industrial Engineering events industry has created numerous opportunities for professionals in the field to collaborate, network, and stay current with the latest advancements. The increasing focus on cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things has driven the demand for these events, and all research suggests that this trend will continue in the future.

Industrial Engineering events are a key driver of the growth and success of the industry, providing attendees with a rich educational and networking experience that is essential for their professional development and the advancement of the industry as a whole. These events offer a unique opportunity for attendees to network with peers and experts from around the world and forge new partnerships.

The COVID-19 pandemic had a major impact on the Industrial Engineering events industry, as it heavily relied on in-person events for product launches, displays, and relationship building. With the sudden cancellations, postponements, or transitions to virtual formats of all events, adaptation became crucial. In 2022, events returned to in-person formats in full force, while some leveraged hybrid formats to provide a more accessible and flexible experience for attendees.

This report aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the number of events in the Industrial Engineering industry and compare it to pre-covid levels to assess the state of the industry post-pandemic. The primary focus of the report is to compare pre covid and post-covid scenarios and provide insight into the way forward for the industry.

(Note:  The  numbers  of  events  reflect  events  captured  on  the  10Times  platform across  the  regions.  While  not  perfect,  we  expect  it  to  be  close  to  reality  with  less than a 10% standard deviation).

INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING EVENTS TRENDS

As depicted in Figure 1, there has been a significant number of Industrial Engineering events in recent years, providing a platform for attendees to connect and engage with leading industry innovators, companies, and specialists. It is worth mentioning that the number of events post-COVID, as shown in Figure 1, is higher than pre-pandemic levels.

This can be attributed to the cost-effectiveness and wider reach of virtual events, which event organizers utilized as a response to the pandemic. Virtual events allowed for increased frequency and reach, although the size of events may have been smaller in comparison to in-person events.

Despite the sudden shift to virtual or hybrid event formats in 2020, these events remained a crucial part of these companies’ marketing efforts, as they provide opportunities for businesses to showcase their products and services, network with industry professionals, and exchange ideas and knowledge with other experts in the field.

The data below highlight trends in Industrial Engineering events across different countries, providing valuable insights into the state of the industry within each region. Denmark hosted a significantly larger number of Industrial engineering events compared to other regions both pre- and post-pandemic as illustrated in Figure 2.

INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING TRADE SHOWS

As illustrated in Figure 3, thousands of Industrial Engineering trade shows took place over the last five years, with a notable increase in the number of trade shows hosted in 2022 as compared to 2019. The rise in the number of trade shows post-pandemic can be attributed to the popularity and convenience of virtual events, as well as the gradual return to in-person events.

The data below illustrates the trend of Industrial Engineering trade shows held in five major regions over the past five years (selected on the basis of the number of events and audience size for this report). From the data, we can see that the number of Industrial Engineering trade shows held in the USA has consistently been the highest among the five regions over the past five years.

This suggests that the USA has a strong demand for such events which is likely driven by factors such as the size of the industry, the presence of leading companies and innovation hubs, and the high level of investment in research and development. It is noteworthy to observe the speed at which each region has recovered in terms of the number of events being held.

Figure 4 illustrates the number of Industrial Engineering trade shows held in the United States over the past five years. The data shows that the number of trade shows organized in the US post-pandemic is lower than pre-covid numbers.

Figure 5 illustrates the number of Industrial Engineering trade shows held in the UK for the past five years. The data indicates that the number of events held in the UK after the pandemic has increased compared to the figures from 2019. This can be attributed to the shift to a combination of in-person and virtual events, whereas pre-pandemic, most events were conducted in person.

Figure 6 displays the number of Industrial Engineering trade shows held in China over the past five years, including pre- and post-pandemic periods. The data reveals that China has hosted more trade shows in 2022, compared to the pre pandemic years, which is surprising. The increase in the number of events post pandemic can be attributed to the growing use of virtual event platforms, which offer a cost-effective and accessible option for event organizers.

Figure 7 illustrates the number of Industrial Engineering trade shows held in Denmark for the past five years. Despite having a lower base compared to countries such as the US and UK, the data shows that Denmark has experienced growth in the number of events from 2019 to 2022.

INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING CONFERENCES

The figures below show Industrial Engineering conferences held in five major geographical regions over the past five years. The data suggests that the number of conferences hosted post-pandemic has increased and is expected to surpass the pre pandemic levels for all countries. The reason behind this increase is likely the increased feasibility and acceptability of virtual-only conferences due to the pandemic.

Figure 8 shows the number of Industrial Engineering conferences held over the past five years, including post-pandemic periods. The data indicates that the number of conferences held post-COVID has shown a steady increase and is expected to continue to grow in 2023.

According to Figure 9, thousands of Industrial Engineering conferences have been held in the United States over the past five years. It is important to note that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many events scheduled for 2020 were either postponed or cancelled.

The data shows that India has hosted more Industrial engineering conferences after the outbreak of COVID as of 2022 than before the pandemic. This trend aligns with the growing demand for events in India. It could signify India catching up with other regions in terms of industry size, economy, and the number of large events in the coming years.

Figure 11 displays the trend in the number of Industrial Engineering conferences held in China over the past five years, including pre- and post-pandemic periods. The data shows that in 2020, hundreds of conferences were scheduled, but most were either cancelled or converted to virtual events due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this disruption, the number of conferences hosted in China has steadily increased post-pandemic.

Figure 12 shows that Denmark has hosted hundreds of industrial engineering conferences over the past five years. The country’s base is lower than that of the US and UK, but it has shown significant growth when comparing 2019 with 2022, and the trend is expected to continue through 2023.

NEW EVENTS HOSTED PRE-COVID VS. POST-COVID

The findings in Figure 13 suggest that in 2019, a significant number of new industrial engineering events were hosted globally. However, in 2022, the number of new events hosted increased even more, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. This is likely due to a combination of existing events being rehosted and new event IPs being created.

The increase in the number of new events can also be attributed to the widespread adoption of virtual and hybrid event formats due to the pandemic. The data suggests that the number of industrial engineering events (old events getting rehosted and new events launched) will continue in 2023, reflecting the fast-paced innovation in this sector.

EVENTS REHOSTED PRE-COVID VS. POST-COVID

It is important to note that the number of Industrial Engineering events hosted may be affected by the frequency of events, as some events may be held bi-annually. Additionally, event rehosting means an event hosted in the same city as its next edition. If the event gets hosted in a different city, as part of a moving event, it’s considered part of the event series but a different event on 10Times platform.

As illustrated in Figure 14, overall, around 48.4% of events were rehosted every year pre-covid. However, this trend saw a significant change in 2022, where the percentage of rehosted events increased to 64.2%.

This increase in the percentage of rehosted events in 2022 can be attributed to various reasons. Such as:

1. Organizers waiting out 2020-2021 to rehost their event in-person event.

(Note: If an older edition of an in-person event is rehosted as a hybrid, it’s considered the same event with a new edition on the platform).

2. Many event organizers, who earlier were not rehosting their events, went ahead with hosting it virtually to leverage the cost advantage offered by the format.

REGION WISE SEARCH TRENDS FOR INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING EVENTS

Industrial Engineering events attract visitors from different regions to network, exchange ideas, learn about market opportunities, and meet potential clients. Before the pandemic, the majority of event searches were concentrated in Asia, followed by Europe and then Africa. However, post-pandemic, there has been a 10% overall increase in the share of Asia, accompanied by a 7% decrease in the Americas.

COUNTRY WISE SEARCH TRENDS FOR INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING EVENTS

The data in Figure 18 shows percent breakdown across-region for searches by professionals for Industrial Engineering events before the pandemic and after the pandemic. The United States had the highest number of searches (33.85%), followed by India and other countries. What’s interesting to note is that individual participant search in the United States has remained the same while that from India has significantly gone up.

PRE-COVID VS. POST-COVID TRENDS – USERS LOOKING FOR EVENTS WITHIN THE SAME GEOGRAPHY (USA)

Figure 20 shows that a significant percentage of individuals searching for Industrial Engineering events from the United States are within the United States, unlike in other geographies, where the search seems to be higher for international events.

The data in Figure 20 also indicates that the number of users searching for such events in 2022 is slightly less than in 2019. This change in the search percentage indicates that the US audiences are looking for potential investment opportunities or importing/exporting prospects in other markets as well .

PRE-COVID VS. POST-COVID USERS FROM THE USA LOOKING FOR EVENTS OUTSIDE

Figure 21 depicts a comparison of pre and post-COVID user search patterns from the US for events outside of the country. Due to the high number of COVID-19 cases and travel restrictions in China, the search percentage from the US for this country has decreased post-pandemic. This shift in search behavior may indicate where US audiences are seeking new investment opportunities or exploring importing/exporting prospects. The impact of the pandemic is evident in these data.

PRE-COVID VS. POST-COVID TRENDS – USERS LOOKING FOR EVENTS WITHIN THE SAME GEOGRAPHY IN (INDIA)

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, 70% of Indian users, searched for Industrial Engineering events within India.

As per Figure 22, the number of users looking for Industrial Engineering events within India in 2022 is comparatively higher than the pre-covid level. It will be interesting to see if this trend continues. We can attribute this to a higher percentage of Indian companies exploring local events to either sell or source from.

While it remains to be seen if this trend will continue into 2023, it will be important to closely monitor the situation to determine whether big Industrial Engineering events will be rehosted in India.

PRE-COVID VS. POST-COVID USERS FROM INDIA LOOKING FOR EVENTS OUTSIDE

Industrial Engineering events outside India were attracting an increasing number of visitors from India before the COVID-19 outbreak. Figure 23 shows the pre and post covid users from India looking at events outside India. The data shows a significant decrease in demand for events in China, which could be a temporary result of the country’s COVID-19 restrictions and policies. On the other hand, there is a noticeable increase in demand for events in the United States.

It will be interesting to see how the distribution of interest changes in 2023, especially considering the push for hosting large-scale events in the UAE (Dubai) and potential visa issues in the US. The results of these changes could impact the demand for events in different regions, making it crucial to keep a close eye on the data and developments.

PRE-COVID VS. POST-COVID USERS TRENDS – USERS LOOKING FOR EVENTS WITHIN THE SAME GEOGRAPHY IN THE (UK)

Figure 24 shows that 57.3% of users were looking for Industrial Engineering events in the UK before covid-19.

In 2022, Industrial Engineering searches within the UK soared to pre-pandemic levels and were slightly higher than pre-covid levels, as shown in Figure 21. Around 60% of the users from the UK searched for events locally, while others explored international markets.

(Note: It would be worth exploring how this compares with other EU countries.)

PRE-COVID VS. POST-COVID USERS FROM THE UK LOOKING FOR EVENTS OUTSIDE

Figure 25 compares the pre- and post-pandemic interest of users from the UK in events outside of the country. The data shows that the US and Spain have reached or are close to pre-pandemic levels in terms of user search. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the Asia Pacific (APAC) events market due to the high number of cases in China.

Despite this, user search from the UK is well spread across regions, including the US. This data provides insights into the shifting interests of UK-based users in attending events in different countries and the impact of the pandemic on event demand.

PRE-COVID VS. POST-COVID USERS TRENDS – USERS LOOKING FOR EVENTS WITHIN THE SAME GEOGRAPHY IN (CHINA)

Before the outbreak of COVID-19, around 28% of Industrial Engineering professionals in China searched for events within the country. However, as shown in Figure 26, the percentage of users looking for events in this sector has declined in 2022. The decrease in demand is likely due to the restrictions and policies implemented to curb the spread of COVID-19 in China. This shift in demand may be temporary, but it is uncertain when it will fully recover.

PRE-COVID VS. POST-COVID USERS FROM CHINA LOOKING FOR EVENTS OUTSIDE

According to the data presented in Figure 27, many Industrial Engineering professionals from China have been searching for events outside of their country. If we examine the data closely, we can see that there have been some shifts in user demand within China. After the pandemic, new regions such as Russia, the UK, and Canada have seen an increase in market share. In contrast, countries like India and other Asia-Pacific countries have seen a decrease in market share. This trend indicates a shift in the preferences of IT & Technology professionals in China for international events.

PRE-COVID VS. POST-COVID USERS TRENDS – USERS LOOKING FOR EVENTS WITHIN THE SAME GEOGRAPHY IN (AUSTRALIA)

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, approximately 17% of Industrial Engineering professionals from Australia were seeking events within the country. As depicted in Figure 28, the percentage of users searching for Industrial Engineering events has increased in 2022, surpassing the pre-pandemic search percentage. It is an interesting trend to observe the change in patterns in demand for events. It is difficult to predict the future with certainty, but tracking the demand of Australian users for local events compared to events happening in other regions could provide valuable insights.

PRE-COVID VS. POST-COVID USERS FROM CANADA LOOKING FOR EVENTS OUTSIDE

As per the data shown in Figure 29, a significant number of Industrial Engineering professionals from Australia have been searching for events outside Germany to meet global manufacturers, suppliers, and distributors. If we look closely, there are some interesting changes in user demand in Australia. New regions (the UK, Spain, Japan, and France) gained market share last year while other counties like Italy, Portugal & Russia have lost market share.

SEARCH QUERIES USED BY USERS TO FIND INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING EVENTS

During the past year, various search queries were used by users to find Industrial Engineering events. Our research found that the most frequently searched terms were “industrial trade fair,” “industrial expo,” “civil engineering events,” “industrial exhibition,” “industrial trade fair,” and “industrial trade shows.” Users looking for events in the Industrial Engineering sector were particularly searching for industrial trade fairs. The data suggests that users utilized different queries to discover events pertinent to their specific interests and requirements within the industry.

(Note: Interesting trends can emerge if we look closely at sub-sectors and remove the obvious keywords mentioned above.)

INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING EXHIBITORS

From global manufacturers to established suppliers, Industrial Engineering industry professionals actively look for industry events to showcase their innovative products & solutions. The Industrial Engineering events cover the end-to-end supply chain and allow exhibitors to meet key industry stakeholders, investors, etc., from every area of the Industrial Engineering industry.

COVID-19 led to a significant decline in demand in exhibitors’ inquiries for Industrial Engineering events during the last three years. However, we see demand slowly crawling back up in 2022 and expect it to rise significantly in 2019. Some internal hypotheses we have internally are:

1. Exhibitors already paid for 2020 shows in 2019 (which for rescheduled).

2. Not enough new companies are still looking at events as a viable marketing channel.

Overall, the decrease in Industrial Engineering event exhibitors in 2022 is not unexpected, given the effects of the pandemic. While this decrease may be a temporary setback, it is imperative to note that the Industrial Engineering events industry is resilient and continues to innovate and adapt to the changing landscape. While the overall count has not reached 2019 numbers, Industrial Engineering events are expected to rebound and meet 2019 numbers in 2023.
